Children’s Foot Care Q&A
What are some common children’s foot problems?
Godoy Foot & Ankle Center offers children’s foot care for a wide range of conditions. Some common childhood foot problems include:
Ingrown toenails
An ingrown toenail is a common condition that occurs when the toenail grows improperly and digs into the nearby soft flesh. Ingrown toenails can be caused by ill-fitting shoes, abnormally shaped nails, or improper nail trimming.
Children who pick at their nails are at a higher risk of developing ingrown toenails. Although the condition can be painful, it’s highly treatable and typically leaves no lasting damage to your child’s foot health.
Warts
Warts are rough, fleshy growths that can develop on the bottoms of the feet. Warts are caused by a type of virus that easily enters through small cuts or breaks in the bottoms of your child’s feet.
The virus that causes warts thrives in damp, warm environments like public pools, gyms, and school locker rooms, making children especially susceptible.
Heel pain
Like adults, children can experience heel pain. Issues like repetitive stress, improper footwear, and foot injuries can all result in heel pain. Many student-athletes experience heel pain as a result of injuries like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, and stress fractures.
Untreated heel pain can cause your child’s condition to worsen and leave lasting damage to their foot or ankle.
Flat feet
Most babies are born with flat feet that typically go away as the arches develop and the feet become less flexible (by age 6). In some cases, your child’s arches may not develop, leaving them with flat feet.
Although flat feet don’t always cause problems, some children can experience issues like soreness, pain, and limited movement.
Left untreated, flat feet can result in problems like chronic pain or arthritis. If your child has flat feet and suffers from pain or restricted movement, the specialists at Godoy Foot & Ankle Center can help you find the most effective treatment.
What are growing pains?
“Growing pains” is a term frequently used to describe foot and leg pain in children, associating the growth and development of the feet with discomfort. This may be true for a small number of children, but there’s no evidence to suggest your child’s natural growth should cause them pain.
If your child suffers from foot pain, schedule a visit with one of the experienced podiatrists at Godoy Foot & Ankle Center. Children can experience a wide range of injuries and deformities that can cause long-term damage to their feet.
What treatments are available for my child’s foot problem?
Treatment depends on your child’s specific foot problem. Before recommending treatment, your doctor performs an in-depth exam that may include imaging tests like an X-ray or MRI. Once your child is diagnosed, your doctor works with you to develop the most effective treatment plan.
Godoy Foot & Ankle Center specializes in conservative care and offers nonsurgical treatments like orthotics and medication, as well as safe and effective surgical procedures. To learn more about children’s foot care services, call the office or book online today.
